Material selection
When selecting elastomeric gaskets, consideration must be given to:

• The primary fluids with which the gasket will be in contact (primary chemical compatibility). 
• The secondary fluids (lubricants or others) to which the gasket will be exposed (secondary chemical compatibility). 
• The suitability of the materials at the extremes application temperatures, hot and cold. 
• The presence of external contaminants such as abrasives.

The chemical interference of primary and secondary fluids must undergo careful analysis.To ensure an appropriate life expectancy, excessive deterioration must be avoided by checking that, among other things, the conditions of: 

• significant  volume variation 
• significant hardness increase or decrease in 
• significant tensile variation strength.
